Between 2011 and 2015, The Department for International Development (DFID) supported nonhumanitarian water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities benefiting an estimated 64,560,000 people in low and middle income countries eligible for Official Development Assistance.

Following this, Bangladesh was also chosen as one of the eligible countries and during that period, four major projects were implemented in Bangladesh namely BRAC SPA and UNICEF’s SHEWA B, CLP, and UPPR. Under the four projects in Bangladesh, 2,520,000 people gained sustainable acces to cleandrinking water sources and 6,320,000 people gained sustainable access to an improved sanitation facilities.

The main purpose of this assessment is to generate quality evidence about the outcomes of DFID’s

water and sanitation portfolio (2011-2015), assessing the sustainability of the water supply and sanitation services, and the effectiveness of the programmes with regard to targeting poor and vulnerable people.

The overall objective of this assessment is to generate quantitative and qualitative evidence about the outcomes of DFID’s WASH Portfolio (2011-2015), in particular addressing issues of sustainability and targeting, as these apply to domestic water supply and household sanitation in rural areas. The

assessment has three subsidiary objectives:

(1) To assess the availability and quality (completeness and reliability) of information relating to results achieved between 2011 and 2015

(2) To assess the sustainability of DFID funded rural water supply and sanitation services by establishing the proportion of people who still have access to water supply and sanitation facilities established with DFID funding between 2011 and 2015.

(3) To assess the underlying factors that have influenced sustainability and the extent that project interventions have engaged with and benefited poor and vulnerable people. Description of technical specialization provided by the firm:

The objective of this study is to develop a business plan and business development strategy for Faecal Sludge Management in Saidpur Municipality. WaterAid, SKS Foundation and Saidpur -Municipality implement an FSM service which provide mechanical pit emptying and transportation service to the households with a fee. Sludge is transported to a treatment plant located within the town, treated and converted to organic manure with an intention to sell in the open market for the use in agriculture. The study will analyses different components of the whole service to develop the business plan and business strategy.

In particular, it will also provide critical inputs regarding the scope of a comprehensive faecal sludge management model for Saidpur Municipality and marketing of the end products generated from faecal sludge. The overall objective of this assignment is to provide recommendation and develop a business model for sustainable FS management considering the following issues:

  • The levels of affordability.
  • Willingness to pay by the municipality
  • Market promotion strategy of end-product from FS
  • Social aspects of the FSM plants and the overall system added to the city sanitation system as well.

Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation and Health (FINISH) is playing a vital role in the WASH sector of the world. It has got its first success in India and Kenya. Later with a single goal: sanitation-for-all, it aimed to reach 27.6 million people across 6 countries by building 5.5 million safe sanitation systems by 2025. 

FINISH Mondial uses a multi-stakeholder approach to involve the entire value chain in sanitation by 

  • Raising awareness on and creating a demand for sanitation amongst end-users; 
  • Mobilizing the supply and reuse business of sanitation 
  • Integrating local financial resources 
  • Collaboration with government and development partners allows for scaling.

As a result, FINISH Mondial brings a revolution to the sanitation sector by improving the quality and safety of sanitation services, reducing the price of these services, and ensuring proper disposal of the waste produced. 

FINISH Mondial formally began its program in Bangladesh in January 2019. And started implementation in January 2020. Primarily 3 Municipalities have been selected- Faridpur, Satkhira and Sakhipur (Tangail). The programme is currently being implemented by BASA, Hope for the Poorest (ASA), Practical Action and Max Foundation. It is expected to expand the program to other municipalities in the period 2020-2025. 

the main objective of the assignment is to develop a marketing strategy to promote the pit emptying service by private pit emptying service providers, professional associations/cooperatives and Municipality.

The study covered few issues such as the current practice and details of available service, consumers’ preference, willingness to pay for the services, communication channel, the content of promotional messages, present market and demand creation for future, partnership issues between service providers, GO-NGO, Cooperatives etc. This marketing strategy was developed based on the findings from Satkhira Municipality.
